International Conference - "Authority Control: Definition and International Experiences"

Florence, Italy - February 10-12, 2003

The University of Florence, Ministry of Cultural Assets (Istituto centrale per il catalogo unico e le informazioni bibliografiche [ICCU] and Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze), Toscany Region and Italian Library Association (AIB), under the auspices of IFLA, promote the International Conference on Authority Control: Definition and International Experience, which will take place in Florence, 10-12 February 2003. Six library service agencies (Burioni, Casalini Libri, Ellediemme, Licosa, Nexus, Swets Blackwell) are sponsoring the initiative.

The Conference aims to encourage the reflection on a decisive aspect of cataloguing. Cataloguing mediation needs the control of the formal coherence among access points, in order to let the user find, identify, select and obtain the information available in a bibliography or in a catalogue.

The Conference intends to be both an occasion of theoretical comparison among the most expert scientists from all over the world on the subject and an opportunity to become aware of the principal international and Italian experiences (construction of a national authority list and authority file). It intends also to contribute to the debate on the revision of national cataloguing rules and on their possible harmonization. Major international experts and many Italian speakers will take part.

The application fee is 130 €, but for subscription within December 15th, 2002, it will be reduced to only 90 €. Application form, conditions, conference programme and other information are available at: http://www.unifi.it/biblioteche/ac.
