Amerikanische Bibliotheken sind im Internet nicht nur durch ihre Kataloge präsent, sondern bieten mit Digital Reference weitere Informationsdienstleistungen in diesem Medium an. Auskunft per E-Mail, Web-Formular und Chat sowie schließlich via Web Contact Center markieren die bisherigen Entwicklungsstufen. Web Contact Center wurden ursprünglich im Kontext von E-Commerce entwickelt. Sie umfassen eine Vielzahl von kommunikativen und kollaborativen Tools. Bibliotheken tragen damit der veränderten Medienkultur Rechnung und können den Herausforderungen der Informationsgesellschaft gerecht werden.

Libraries in the US not only offer their catalogues via Internet. Their Web Services include Digital Reference Services. E-Mail-Reference constitutes the first stage of Digital Reference. Further developments are Web forms, Chat Reference and Web Contact Centers. Web Contact Centers contain a lot of tools and features that improve customer relation management in the E-Commerce. Libraries offering digital Reference Services meet the criteria of a changing media culture and rise the challenges of information society.

Les bibliothèques américaines présentent dans internet non seulement leur catalogues, mais aussi, par Digital Reference, des autres services d'information. On a pu réaliser des services d'information par E-Mail, Web-Formular, Chat, ainsi que le Web Contact Center; ce dernier fut développé en connection avec E-Commerce. Ces services comprennent un nombre des outils communicatives et collaboratives. Ainsi les bibliothèques tiennent compte de la culture changée des media et puissent satisfaire les challenges de la société d'information.
