Universitäten sind nicht nur wissensintensive Einrichtungen, sondern strukturell-immanent mit Wissen verbunden. Sie produzieren, formalisieren und verbrauchen Wissen und Information. Kommerzielle Wirtschaftsunternehmen mit einem noch nicht annähernd so hohen Wissenspotenzial, setzen mit großer Selbstverständlichkeit Knowledge Management ein, um das Kapital ihrer Mitarbeiter zu sichern und zu nutzen. Universitäten hingegen beginnen erst zögerlich mit dem Einsatz von Knowledge Management, obwohl sie ein riesiges Potenzial dazu besitzen. Als Einsatzbereiche werden Lehre, Forschung und die Verwaltung (mit allen Prozessen im Personal- und Ressourcenmanagement) diskutiert.
     Die Bibliothek und ihre Mitarbeiter sollten dabei unbedingt beim Einsatz von Knowledge Management in Universitäten beteiligt werden: Informationsspezialisten sind in der Lage Daten aufzubereiten, zu strukturieren, zu bewerten und zur Verfügung zu stellen, während die Bibliothek einer Universität der Ort der Interdisziplinarität, des sozialen Austauschs und der allgemeinen Kommunikation ist. Bibliotheken und Bibliothekare werden als kompetente Partner für die Einführung von KM in Universitäten vorgestellt.

Universities are not only knowledge-intensive institutions, but are also linked to knowledge in a structurally immanent manner. They produce, formalize and consume knowledge and information. Commercial enterprises with a knowledge potential far from that of universities quite naturally apply knowledge management to secure and utilize their human capital. Universities, in contrast, are only just beginning to use knowledge management, although they have an enormous potential for this. The fields of application under discussion are teaching, research and administration (with all the processes in personnel and resource management).
     Libraries and their staff should definitely be involved in the application of knowledge management at universities. Information specialists are capable of processing data, of structuring, evaluating and making them available, while the library of a university is the place of interdisciplinarity, social exchange and general communication. Libraries and librarians are presented as competent partners for the introduction of KM in universities.

Les universités ne sont pas seulement des établissements à forte concentration de connaissances, mais elles sont également associées aux connaissance d'une manière structurelle-immanente. Elles produisent, formalisent et consomment des connaissances et de l'information. Les entreprises commerciales, dont le potentiel de connaissances est loin d'être celui des universités, utilisent tout naturellement la gestion des connaissances pour sauvegarder leur capital humain et pour en profiter. Les universités, par contre, n'utilisent la gestion des connaissances que de façon hésitante, bien qu'elles possèdent un potentiel énorme. Les domaines d'application sont: l'enseignement, la recherche et l'administration (avec tous les procédés de la gestion du personnel et des ressources).
     Les bibliothèques et leurs collaborateurs devraient absolument participer à l'emploi de la gestion des connaissances dans les universités. Les spécialistes de l'information sont capable de traiter les données, de les structurer, évaluer et rendre disponibles, alors que la bibliothèque d'une université est le lieu de l'interdisciplinarité, de l'échange sociale et de la communication générale. Les bibliothèques et les bibliothécaires sont présentés en tant que partenaires compétents pour l'introduction de la gestion des connaissances dans les universités.
