Design and implementation of a multi-classification authority file for the Austrian Library Network

The article reports on a new authority file that can accommodate several different classification schemes. This new database has been recently implemented in the central system of the Austrian Library Network using the "Aleph 500" library software. So far, this authority file contains the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) and the German version of the Dutch Basic Classification (BC). The paper goes into detail on the following aspects: aims and objectives of the project, conceptual design, editorial processing, setup of tables and parameters (including data element catalogue and indexing), integration into the consortium's architecture, options for the use by local library systems, steps of project implementation. It concludes with an overview of the present functionalities for cataloguers and OPAC users, as well as a brief look at future prospects. B.I.T.online 9(2006) Nr. 4

B.I.T.online 9(2006) Nr. 4
