Kostenreduzierung und Effizienzsteigerung sind in Öffentlichen Bibliotheken wichtige Schlagwörter. Automatisierungs- und Selbstbedienungsprozesse rücken daher zunehmend in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Durch den Einsatz von RFID im Front Office können in vielen Bibliotheken langfristig erhebliche finanzielle Entlastungen bei gleichzeitigem Ausbau des Serviceangebotes erreicht werden. Grundsätzlich ist aber vor der Anschaffung der RFID- Systemkomponenten von jeder Bibliothek zu überprüfen, ob der Einsatz von RFID wirtschaftlich zu begründen ist. Zu bedenken sind die Kosten für die Erstinvestition und den Dauerbetrieb. Die Rentabilität von RFID ist in einer Öffentlichen Bibliothek umso größer, je größer die Leistungskraft im Entleihungsbereich ist. In the long term it is possible for public libraries to reduce financial burden and improve services with the help of RFID in front office. It is in principle necessary for every individual public library to check out the economically successful work of RFID before buying the single parts of a RFID-System.
