Taylor & Francis announces expanded scope
for flagship PeerJ journal

Multidisciplinary open access journal offers new publishing option
for researchers in Chemistry, Engineering and Materials Science

Taylor & Francis has announced an expansion in the scope of multidisciplinary journal PeerJ, offering authors a more streamlined publishing experience, enhanced visibility of their work and new opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration. Highly regarded for its innovative approach to open and transparent publishing, researchers across a broader range of related scientific fields can now submit to PeerJ’s flagship STM title.

In addition to Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences, PeerJ (previously informally known as ‘PeerJ Life & Environment’) welcomes submissions in allied disciplines, including Chemistry, Materials Science and some fields of Engineering. With this expanded scope, the five PeerJ Chemistry titles and Open Advances series have now closed to new submissions, simplifying the publishing process for authors and uniting related fields under one journal.

Todd Hummel, Vice President of STM Publishing at Taylor & Francis, commented: “This is an exciting evolution for PeerJ. By becoming a more comprehensive journal, PeerJ will create new opportunities for researchers across related disciplines to benefit from its global reach and visibility. While its scope is expanding, PeerJ remains steadfast in its commitment to expert review, research integrity, and advancing open research.”

Later in 2026, PeerJ will further broaden its scope to include Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and other areas of Engineering. PeerJ Computer Science will continue to operate as a standalone journal, maintaining its focus on cutting-edge research in the field.

Stephen Johnson, Editor in Chief, said: “PeerJ has a strong record of publishing quality science in a range of disciplines. The newly expanded journal will build on our success to date, evolving to provide a home for multi-disciplinary research that supports greater collaboration.”

A program of updates to PeerJ.com has also been announced, designed to enhance the experience for authors and readers. Reflecting PeerJ’s expanded scope, the website will showcase a wider range of world-class research addressing today’s most pressing challenges.
