Seit Beginn der elektronischen Revolution in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts werden Informationsvermittlern wie Bibliothekaren, Dokumentaren oder anderen Dienstleistern der Branche katastrophale Zukunftschancen vorausgesagt. Maschinen, Computer, Künstliche Intelligenz, so heißt es, würden diesen Berufen bald die Arbeit gänzlich abnehmen – Voraussagen, die die Betroffenen je nach Mentalität ängstigen, hoffnungsvoll stimmen oder erheitern. Aber diese Prognosen sind ja nur Teil einer viel grundsätzlicheren Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Mensch und Arbeit, die auch in der (abendländischen) Literatur immer wieder aufgeworfen wurde. Vom Arbeit-losen Paradies der Genesis reicht das Spektrum der literarischen Erörterungen bis zur Definition von Arbeit als Konstituens des Menschseins überhaupt im 20. Jahrhundert. Der vorliegende Essay schlägt deshalb einen Bogen von der Bibel bis zur Science Fiction unserer Tage und stellt dabei trotz seines scheinbar leichten Tones existentielle Fragen, die wohl auch ganz individuell eine Antwort fordern. Since the beginning of the electronic revolution in the 20^th century it has been predicted that „information brokers” such as librarians, documentalists or similar would suffer a disastrous future. According to this prediction machines, computers or artificial intelligence would soon deprive them of any employment. The persons concerned are, depending on their mentality, frightened by such prospects or hopeful or they are amused. But such prognoses are only a part of a much more basic debate on the relationship between man and labour. A theme, which has been consistently reoccurring in (occidental) literature. Its literary discussion ranges from the „work-free” paradise in Genesis to work being defined as the constitutional element of personhood itself in the 20^th century. Accordingly, this essay covers the subject starting with the Bible up to contemporary Science Fiction. It is a light read, but at the same time asks some very existential questions, though such can only be answered individually. B.I.T.online 10(2007) Nr. 1

Depuis le commencement de la révolution électronique au 20ème siècle, il a été prédit pour les professionnelles de l’informations comme les bibliothécaires, les documentalistes ou autres employés de la branche un futur désastreux. Les machines, les ordinateurs, l’intelligence artificielle, auraient dépossédé de leur travail ces professionnels. Selon leur mentalité, les personnes concernées, par de telles perspectives, étaient soit effrayées, soit plein d'espoir ou amusées. De tels pronostics sont seulement une partie d'une discussion beaucoup plus fondamentale sur le rapport entre l'homme et le travail ; un thème qui a été longuement abordé par la littérature occidentale. La discussion littéraire de ce thème alla même jusqu’à définir le chômage comme le paradis décrit dans la Genèse où cet état des choses serait constitutif de l’homme du 20ème siècle. Voilà pourquoi cet essai couvre le sujet commençant par la bible jusqu'à la science-fiction contemporaine. La lecture est aisée, mais il pose en même temps quelques questions très existentielles, même si celles-ci ne peuvent être répondus qu’individuellement. B.I.T.online 10(2007) Nr. 1
